Extra-Curricular Ensembles
Basketball Band: Basketball Band is an ensemble that performs at Boys and Girls home basketball games at the end of the fall and beginning of the spring semester. This group performs exciting, popular music at a high level for our community and student body to promote school spirit. Rehearsals occur once a week once the season begins. Once material is mastered, rehearsals cease, and performances continue until the end of the season.
2'O Clock Jazz Band: 2 O'Clock West is an extra-curricular jazz ensemble at Fort Zumwalt West. This group meets once a week during the spring semester. This Jazz Band is open to students who are new to jazz, students looking to expand their knowledge of jazz, or students who may wish to improve jazz skills on a secondary instrument. Students will develop skills in style, blend, as well as introductory levels of improvisation. The ability to read music is essential to this class.
Woodwind/Brass Choir: Woodwind Choir and Brass Choir are two separate chamber ensembles that meet once a week starting near the end of the fall semester and the beginning of the spring semester. These groups allow students to focus on material specifically for their instrument family, hone skills on their instrument, and perform quality literature for chamber ensembles. These groups perform at Large Ensemble Contest in the spring semester as a culmination of their rehearsals.
Modulation Z: is a winter indoor drumline ensemble consisting of students from Fort Zumwalt West, South, North, and East High Schools. It is the first and only combined competitive performance group in the district. Started in 2010, Modulation Z was created for students who did not have a winter drumline program at their “home” school to get the opportunity to participate in a fun and exciting percussion experience. All percussionists and any other instrumentalists interested in playing percussion are welcome to participate. Rehearsals take place in the evening during the winter and spring months. Auditions are for placement purposes only. The staff takes great care to find a role for all interested students.
Percussion Studio: Percussion Studio is a chamber ensemble that meets once a week starting near the end of the fall semester and the beginning of the spring semester. This group performs a variety of literature written for the large percussion ensemble. Students will focus on developing percussion techniques, ear training skills, music theory, as well as appropriate rehearsal and performance disciplines. This group performs at various percussion festivals and events in the spring semester.
Winter Guard: Winter Guard is an activity that provides students an opportunity to be a part of a team of dedicated individuals that work together in order to develop their skills in dance, flag, saber, & rifle. Students will travel and perform at various contests during the spring semester, as well as see many performance groups at various levels of competition. Winter Guard at FZW consists of two groups, Silver and Purple; group placement is determined by audition.
If you would like more information about color guard or winter guard, please contact Mr. Brady Eaton (beaton@fz.k12.mo.us).
Silver Sound: Silver Sound is an ensemble which focuses on removing barriers and fostering social change through music. This peer mentoring program pairs band students with Silver Sound members with intellectual or developmental needs. The band director and their students utilize specialized curriculum, training, and structure to provide a meaningful performance experience for all students. Current band students are encouraged to join the group as mentors. This group performs alongside their peer mentors at our Spring Jazz Concert (typically in April).
